It’s 1pm, it’s Tuesday (maybe), and, if the weather permits, I’m about to practice my favorite quarantine ritual: finding the one patch of sun in my apartment where I will sit and proceed to BASK.
To bask, (verb.) the act of blissfully absorbing ultraviolet rays from the sun.
The forecast calls for clear skies and warm temps. *rubs eyes* Umm.. where’s the fog? Where’s the high chance of rain? San Francisco….this isn’t like you 😉 (am I flirting with a city?)
I run all of 2 feet down the hall to my room, open the door, and see the sunbeam. “There she is,” I say out loud to absolutely no one.
My bay windows let in a lot of natural light (brag), but the sun patch itself is pretty small (see photo above). I fit whatever body parts, limbs, appendages I can inside the patch and begin to cook till desired crispiness.
Being an aspiring zen person, I feel like basking is productive. The warmth calms me down and the rays elevate my mood. I get to regain some sanity and recharge, plus it’s a welcomed break from work, tasks, and if I’m lucky, my thoughts. Bask and you shall receive (my new mantra).
If you think I’m enjoying my moderate sun exposure without sunscreen or polarized sunglasses, I cordially invite you to THINK AGAIN. Since basking has become my favorite activity, my sunglasses have become my favorite accessory. What is the point of taking care of myself, if I’m not taking care of myself?
If you’re wondering, “Why is this person settling for a patch of sun? There’s a UV ray buffet outside, why don’t they just go for a run?” If being outside in nature or going for a run is your thing, power to ya! Everyone has their own quarantine rituals. I’m not much of a runner (I get a runner’s high just going down the stairs to get my mail), but I’ll get outside here and there to drink a cup of coffee with my roommate on our roof.
Ultimately, what’s important is that we all find our own safe, socially distanced, curve-flattening ways to stay sane during these wild times. If you’re like me and you enjoy a little indoor bask, just make sure it’s not at the expense of your skin or eyes. You can enjoy and deflect the ultraviolet rays from the sun all at the same time #multibasking. Stay safe everyone!
